Mix 107.9 – Real Music Variety

Mix 107.9 is a much-loved station in the central region of Maine (covering the areas of Augusta, Waterville and Skowhegan). Listen to this station live here.

What to Listen To (The Format)

Their slogan is “Today’s Best Variety,” and their format is Adult Contemporary (AC) / Hot AC. Basically, it’s the “safe” and upbeat station you put on at the office or in the car. Their programming is based on three pillars:

  • The ’80s, ’90s, and Today: You’ll hear everything from Bon Jovi, Madonna, and Prince to current artists like Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. They have a special love for ’80s nostalgia.

Special Programs:

  • “The ’80s at 8”: A station classic where they only play music from that decade at 8:00 AM.
  • American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (’80s Edition): On weekends, they rebroadcast Casey Kasem’s original shows, which is a direct hit of nostalgia.

The station has a very distinct personality thanks to its morning show:

“The Morning Mix with Jay & Desiree”: Jay Hanson (who is also the station’s owner, a rarity these days) and Desiree Sirois are the voices that wake up the region. They are famous for being very approachable, with plenty of local humor, and contests like “The Not-So-Impossible Question.”

A little history, here’s what I know.

107.9 FM has had many lives before becoming what it is today.
It was born on St. Patrick’s Day as WHQO, an “oldies” station.

In the late 90s, it went through everything: it was a sports station, then it tried to be a youth-oriented Top 40 station called “The Party,” and it was even a news/talk radio station.

The birth of Mix (2005): They finally found their identity as Mix 107.9, focusing on that mix of adult pop-rock that has worked very well in both rural and urban Maine.
