BBC Radio 6 Music is the BBC’s digital station dedicated to alternative, indie, electronic music and more, broadcasting 24/7 from the Broadcasting House in the center of the British capital.
BBC Radio 6 Music London debuted on March 11, 2002, in response to the demand for non-commercial music, born from the merger of GLR (Greater London Radio) and the 1990s indie scene.
Operated by the BBC since its inception in Western House (now Broadcasting House), it survived threats of closure in 2010 thanks to fan campaigns, evolving into a digital hub with podcasts and live broadcasts post-pandemic.
In 2025, it celebrates 23 years with revamped shows such as the new Femi Koleoso show (from Ezra Collective, debuting in December) and coverage of awards like the Mercury Prize, remaining true to its ethos of “alternative music for alternative minds” in a “London radio 2025” market saturated with mainstream pop.
